Yelp used to be where you looked for local restaurants; it has now become the Go-To site for just about everything.  That includes professional services, products, trades, retail and, restaurants.  Have you Googled something lately and seen how close to the top of the first page Yelp is?  Let’s say you are looking for a podiatrist in Las Vegas.  Right after the Google listings for podiatrists (Google My Business), look at the number 2 and number 3 items that come up. You’ll notice they are both Yelp pages.

Yelp is Important

For most consumers, it is extremely tempting to find out who “The Best 10 Podiatrists in Las Vegas” are.  This is happening with almost every type of business.  If you are unlucky enough to have 1 and/or 2 Star reviews, you may have noticed that they show up even if you have many more 4 and 5 Star reviews.  We are constantly hearing from business owners about how they “hate” Yelp because that 1 or 2 Star review keeps showing up.  The 1 or 2 Star review keeps showing up because Yelp provides a cross-section of reviews based on Star ratings.  In other words, no matter how many 4 and 5 Star reviews you have, the 1 and 2 may still show up.  Yelp, like Amazon, wants to promote those reviews that are deemed legitimate.  They want reviews from people who have an account.  They want people who post reviews on a regular basis.  To top it off, they don’t want business owners to solicit reviews.

Another aggravating thing for many business owners is that their competition is advertising on their Yelp page.  Maybe your competition has more reviews.  Maybe they even have more 4 and 5 Star reviews.  Your potential customer is then tempted to check out your competition.
